WHAT IS SUBSOUNDS EP?

The SubSounds EP course (formerly known as SubSounds Intro) is a song-writing and recording course that caters for individuals who are new to SubSounds, it is a smaller group with a maximum of 16 participants, that runs for 16 weeks from the beginning of November 2021.

This group is similar to the SubSounds LP course in that participants take part in workshops covering songwriting, composition and performing. However this course is different in that it also focuses on teaching participants basic musicianship, band etiquette and other skills that helps prepare them to join the SubSounds LP group, and ultimately for their journey in the music industry.

The SubSounds EP group work towards creating a collaborative EP of their original songs that they write throughout the term. This EP is recorded in Contact Studio in Rua Red by our mentors. The group then launch this EP at a gig alongside SubSounds School group in The Civic Theatre in Tallaght.

The 16-week course costs €290.

There’s not many people my age I know who like music, so it’s a nice group of people that you can just show your true self with I guess

SCHEDULE:

Workshops take place every Thursday evening from 6pm - 9pm.

Term 1: October mid-term break until the Christmas break

During this term participants are encouraged to try out instruments they have never played before, and are offered tuition in vocals, guitar, bass, keyboard and drums. Guest musicians come in to give masterclasses in various aspects of musicianship and to give participants an insight into pursuing music as a profession. At the end of the first term, the group performs stripped down acoustic versions of the songs that have been written to an invited audience in the Performance Space in RUA RED.

Term 2: January until the Easter break

Participants have the opportunity to further develop their musicianship, songwriting skills and ensemble playing. There is a greater emphasis on preparing new pieces for recording and performance. At the end of the February mid term break, all SubSounds EP participants begin recording sessions in CONTACT Studio in Rua Red to make their EP for that year. The recordings are mixed in CONTACT Studio and the album is uploaded to all major streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.

The end of the programme is marked by a live performance of their original music, which takes place in The Civic Theatre after the Easter mid-term break. Participants are encouraged to collaborate as much as possible, with the aim that each participant takes part in as many songs as they can.

Throughout both terms, all participants have access to free rehearsal times in the music rooms in RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre so that they can spend time outside the Wednesday and mid-term workshops rehearsing and working on their material.
