What is Subsounds?

Sub Sounds is a youth music collective that is managed and delivered by a partnership between Alternative Entertainments and CONTACT Studio. It is funded by Music Generation South Dublin. CONTACT Studio is a South Dublin County Arts Office initiative.

The programme takes place in RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre, Tallaght, and it is open to young throughout South County Dublin.

Sub Sounds aims to empower young people to develop their creativity, musicianship and composition skills through mentorship and collaboration.

MEET THE MENTORS

Martin Moran

SubSounds Programme Manager & Mentor.

Martin has been involved with Alternative Entertainments since the 80s. His first contact was as guitar student and attendee of The Tallaght Rock School. In the 90s he began working as guitar tutor with The Des Carty Music School. He then joined the festival support staff as administrator and eventually Music Programme Manager. He started The South Dublin Rock School with Elton Mullally in 2004.The project changed its name to SubSounds in 2009. Martin is a professional musician who performs and records with a number of bands in the Dublin area.

Elton Mullally

Elton Mullally is a professional musician and television producer with over 15 years experience with Youth Music Programming in South Dublin. His areas of expertise are song writing, singing and bass playing. He works as a live/ studio session musician and has appeared on numerous albums and tours over the years with the likes of Mark Geary, Star Little Thing, Nina Hynes, Roesy and Autamata. With his television production company Southpaw Pictures he has produced/ directed music videos and television appearances for the likes of James Vincent McMorrow, Villagers, Warpaint & Gomez. He has co-produced 11 albums for the Sub Sounds Music Programme. Elton graduated from Pulse College in 2018 with a Certificate in Audio & Music Production.

Colin J Morris

Colin is a composer, musician and recording engineer. He has performed and toured with many acts since the early 90s. As well as performing, Colin has composed music for film, television and theatre. One of which projects was the award winning Irish feature film ‘Eamon’ (2009) in which Colin composed the score with Irish artist Miriam Ingram. He has recorded the likes of Villagers, Sinead O’Connor, Brendan Benson and Warpaint and co-produces the annual Sub Sounds album. In 2018 Colin graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a masters degree in Music and Media Technologies.

Rob Davis

Rob has over 20 years experience in the music industry, having commercially released 3 Album and 5 EP’s. He has also toured extensively throughout USA and England. Away from music, Rob is one half of Southpaw Pictures a TV Production Company who have produced Television programming for some of Ireland’s main broadcasters. Relatively new to the team, Rob joined SubSounds as a mentor in 2017.

Domhnaill Corrigan

Domhnaill is a songwriter/composer, audio engineer and multi-instrumentalist from Lucan, County Dublin. Domhnaill is a guitar/keys player and vocalist in backing bands for singers such as Cat Dowling, Ciara Dalton and Daire Heffernan and is also the bass player in Dublin based punk band Slightly Dishevelled. Domhnaill also works as a freelance audio engineer and music producer having recorded and produced music by eilis, Fough and the JEMZ album released by SubSounds as well as his own single Are You Still Here which he released under the pseudonym Pi. Domhnaill has composed electronic/ambient music for projects such as the emergence young choreographer programme and for a short film series called Finding The Wild, by Tallaght Community Arts. Domhnaill finished his last year of Subsounds as a participant in 2019 and has been helping out with the programme as a mentor and audio engineer every year ever since.

Hugh O’Dwyer

Hugh is a professional musician and audio engineer from Dublin. A student of the South Dublin Rock School and very first Sub Sounds group, he has been involved in the Irish music industry for over a decade touring extensively with acts including Saint Sister, Trinity Orchestra, Carron, and his own group Spies. Hugh is a guitarist, bassist and classically trained double bass player and has taught music with the Des Carty school of music for over 5 years. In the past he has worked for Festival Republic producing live gigs and festivals and also as a music journalist featuring regularly with The Thin Air magazine. In 2019, Hugh started his own independent record label Big Move Records with the goal of promoting new, important projects both abroad and in Ireland. He is currently nearing the end of a Ph.D in audio engineering from Trinity College where he completed an undergrad in electronic engineering.

Cíara Dalton

Ciara is a singer/songwriter and podcaster from Tallaght. She was a participant of Subsounds Tallaght from the year 2012 until 2016. Ciara completed her BA in Creative and Cultural Industries from TU Dublin in 2020, and is currently working on a collaborative country album with the working title “Inside Voice”. Ciara released her first two singles in 2021, “Loser in Love” and her second single “My Perfect Man” both of which received incredible feedback on a national scale. Ciara is currently host of two podcasts “Arts Insight” which is an Arts and Culture podcast recorded and edited by Contact Studios, and an original comedy podcast “I’ll ask my Mam”.

Amy Naessens

Amy Naessens is a pop/soul artist from Dublin, Ireland. After studying Commercial Modern Music, majoring in Song writing and Cultural Perspectives at BIMM Dublin, she has spent the last twelve months gigging across the country while recording and releasing three studio singles. 2019 captured performances across multiple Irish showcases from Electric Picnic to Dublin's renowned Ruby Sessions and January 2020 displayed her first headline show in Whelan's which was covered across Irish press from RTE 2FM, Hotpress and The Irish Times. Her third studio single is set for release on July 17th. Amy has also worked as a choir director for the Knocklyon Youth Gospel Choir and has a Diploma in vocal training

Lara Fleming

.Based in South Dublin, Lara began her musical journey as a child with singing, ukulele, guitar, and songwriting. She was once a participant in the SubSounds programme from 2012-2016. Lara graduated from BIMM in 2021, completing modules such as Cultural Perspectives, Music Teaching, Professional Development and Ensemble Performance. Lara has been teaching vocals, ukulele and guitar with Des Carty Music School and Music Generation programmes such as 'Early Years', 'Ready Steady Play' and 'Hangout Sessions'. Lara also works as a session musician recording vocals and harmonies for other musicians, and is beginning to record her own music.

Karl McCrone

Karl is a session guitarist and producer from Dublin. He started his career playing in musical theatre pit orchestras as a teenager and has spent the last 10 years performing in some of Ireland's and the UK's top venues and festivals. (Electric Picnic, RTE's Saturday Night Show and London's O2 Forum Kentish Town). Karl graduated from BIMM Dublin in 2015 and most recently from Griffith College where he studied Music Production for Video Games. Some artists he currently plays with include TADGH, ELKAE, Daire Heffernan, ANDI and Lydia Ford amongst others.
